Copier vs. MFP?

Which Do You Need?

There is always a debate in the copier world, do you need a copier or an mfp?  Let’s take a quick look at what the difference between the two are before we address your specific needs.

Copier – Technically speaking, a copier would be a device which has the primary function of making copies.  Generally, this machine is going to be bigger and be lower in cost per print because there is anticipated volume going to this device.  If you are doing a lot of copies, say you run monthly reports that go to 75 people so you get 5,000 pages through these reports, a typical “copier” would be right for you.

MFP – Multi-Function Printer.  What this device is used for is multiple functions.  It is equally used for printing, copying, scanning and faxing.  It is usually based around a printer’s engine and then the manufacturer adds glass.  This device is generally used for smaller jobs and will generally work well up to about 10,000 pages a month.  Most people would do well with an MFP — but there is often a reluctance because “it doesn’t look like a copier.”
